DANIEL DAY LEWIS - Best Actor Oscar Win!
10 Minutes With Daniel Day Lewis - Best Actor Oscar Winner:
Congratulations to Daniel Day Lewis for his best actor Oscar win last night - not that he needed the win for us all to know he’s the best actor of our time. Yep, I said it, he’s awesome.
It’s not often you get to stand face to face with one of your idols, so when I was asked to shoot Daniel Day Lewis, needless to say, I was pretty psyched. Although some of that excitement dissipates when your told you have ten minutes to shoot him, in a small hotel room, and his publicist tell you that you aren’t allowed to direct him. “Don’t ask him to move his arm or turn his head… he wants it to be an organic experience”. Although this makes things a bit more challenging, I totally understand his preference. He’s really not there to “act” like Daniel Day Lewis nor am I there to “direct” him to be himself.
So, I have ten minutes with my idol… how am I going to make the most of the situation? I really wanted to do 3 setups, with subtle changes in lighting and background, so I create a lighting setup that would allow me to do this by moving my position, without having to ask Daniel to change position, until the last setup. My lighting setup and description are below…
Shot #1

Shot #2

Shot #3

I set up two backgrounds, a blue one behind Daniel and a black backdrop to the left of him.
Image #1 I used a Mola dish as my main light, an Octabank as a fill and a strip bank behind him, to create an edge light. This was my “Cover” shot.
Image #2. I unplugged the edge light behind him, and moved my position to his left side - the black background was now “behind him” with Daniel in profile. He’s a nice guy with a great smile, so I was happy to capture this after a bit of small talk about Lincoln.
Image #3. I didn’t want to waste any time changing camera settings, so I used a second camera for this last shot. I used the natural window light and no strobe light for fill but instead, had my strobe’s modeling lights levels set to the perfect fill exposure. By the time Daniel walked 3 steps to the window sill, I picked up my second camera and was ready to shoot.
Here’s image #1 of Daniel Day Lewis on the cover of Italian Vanity Fair.

Tony Hawk / PR Shoot

It was so great to have the opportunity to work with Tony Hawk, to create his new PR shots. As you can guess, he has more action photos than he can keep track of, so our goal was focusing on classic portraiture. That said, I couldn’t help but shoot one action shot.
Tony is hard working, extremely humble and a really nice guy in general.

BVI Travel Pics - Sony NEX7
I bought a Sony NEX7 this past Dec, for my trip to the BVI’s . I wanted something a bit smaller and lighter than my Canon 5D Mark 2 but didn’t want to compromise image quality or size. Being extremely picky about image quality, I must admit, I was quite impressed with this camera.
I even tried it’s Panoramic Sweep Function - check it out. CLICK HERE
All of these images were shot RAW on my Sony NEX7 and processed with Adobe Camera Raw, with no additional retouching.

BVI Panoramic Pics - Sony NEX7
Being that I’m a professional retoucher / photographer, if I wanted to create a panoramic image, I would take a series of images, panning across a scene, and then manually composite them together in Photoshop, to create one, seamless image. I’ve never even used the automated “Photomerge” action in Photoshop. That said, I was on vacation, so why not have a little fun with the Sony NEX7’s panoramic sweep function. You just hold down the shutter, pan across the scene and the camera automatically stitches together all of the image into one panoramic image.
If I had a professional need for a panoramic image, I would still do it manually but I must say, I was impressed with the results. All of these images were shot as jpegs and not retouched. Only some minor color correction.

I had such a great time shooting Keegan & Jordan. I think I actually started crying from laughter at one point. If you haven’t seen their Obama skit, you must Google it right now. The image on the left shows Obama (Jordan Peele) and Luther, Obama’s “Anger Translator” (Keegan-Michael Key).

Lego Wars (Part II)

“Trooper Mouse” - 24”x24”

“#darkside” - 24” x 48”

“Vader X-ray MRI” - 30” x 40” Gallery LED Lightbox

“Vader X-ray MRI” (Detail)
These are a few of my latest LEGO WARS pieces, which I’ll be showing on November 29th, 2012 at the Samuel Owen Gallery. All of these pieces begin with macro photography of Star Wars Lego figures. Other elements are photographed as well and then manipulated in Photoshop.
“Trooper Mouse” was inspired by Disney’s recent $4 billion purchase of Lucasfilm. There has been much speculation, and a few jokes, regarding Disney’s influence on a new Star Wars film. I personally would like to see mouse ears added to all of the trooper helmets… but that’s just me. The pieces are archival prints, front mounted with acrylic and rear mounted with aluminum dibond.
“Vader X-ray MRI” is just that, an X-ray / MRI of a Darth Vader Lego Figure. I tried to represent all of Vader’s injuries, as portrayed in all 6 films but adapted them for the Lego figure form. Hence the mechanical claws for hands. I’ve also included hidden messages in the MRI brain activity and Vader’s heart. These will only be visible in the final piece, viewing them with a magnifying glass. The piece is printed on Duratran and mounted on an LED light panel, lit from behind, like a real X-ray.

The Cast of ANNIE on Broadway.

Photo: Dale May - All Rights Reserved
Talent: The cast of Annie on Broadway
Annie (Lilla Crawford), the dog (Sunny) and all of the Orphans were so amazing to work with. I was very impressed by their ability to take direction and then, take it even further. So talented!
We only had a few hours with the cast, all photographed at Picture Ray Studio.
The American Museum of Natural History was gracious enough to let us shoot this background for our group shot. Unfortunately, we had to shoot during business hours, so the scene was mobbed with tourists. I took multiple exposures, hoping people would move enough for me to grab “clean areas” from several shots. As it turns out, when people find a comfortable dinosaur to sit on, they tend to stay a while. No worries, that’s what the clone stamp tool is for.

Anthony Green from Circa Survive

Photography: Dale May - All Rights Reserved
I had a great time shooting Anthony Green of Circa Survive, at his home in PA. Anthony and his wife have two dogs and two children, but keep the home spotless… so I took pleasure in messing it up for them. All of the items in the images have a story behind them, like the afro pick he stole from Questlove of The Roots.

The DAVE HILL project. Episode 1 / PRISON!

Photography: Dale May - All Rights Reserved
My good friend Dave Hill and I thought it would be a fantastic idea if we worked on a photo project together. Ya see, Dave is a comedian, actor, writer and a musician. Some of his other talents I don’t feel right mentioning but whatever he does, he does it amazingly well.
Well, we couldn’t hold out anymore and thought it would be nice to debut the first image in our series. Episode 1 / PRISON!
As we all know, the first night in prison can be awkward, not knowing anyone, trying to fit in, blah blah blah. I think Merle Haggard said it best: “There’s not much a man can do inside a prison, except take his memory trips and hide the pain”. Well, in this case, I’m just glad to see that Dave is already making friends.
